What Are The Side Effects Of Taking Cytomel?

with No Comments

Cytomel is the most powerful form of thyroid hormone that is capable of causing side effects. The substance acts on the body, accelerating the basic metabolism, affecting protein synthesis and increasing the body’s sensitivity to catecholamines (eg, adrenaline). Thyroid hormones are necessary for the normal development and differentiation of all cells of the human body. These hormones also regulate protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism, affecting how human cells use energy compounds. Compared to Levothyroxine (T4), Cytomel (T3) has a faster onset of action, as well as a shorter biological half-life, which may be associated with less plasma protein binding to thyroxine-binding globulin and transthyretin.

When properly selected dose Cytomel, side effects do not occur. Possible allergic reactions, worsening of heart failure, angina pectoris. Rarely there were allergic reactions in combination with “iodine” rhinitis, iododerma (iodine acne), angioedema Quincke, edema of the salivary glands, exfoliative dermatitis, iodine fever.

The overdose is characterized by symptoms of thyrotoxicosis (heartbeat, trembling fingers, heart rhythm disturbance, anxiety, increased sweating, insomnia, weight loss, relaxation of the chair).

Treatment of overdose: reducing the daily dose of Cytomel, a break in treatment for a few days, the introduction of beta-blockers. After the disappearance of undesirable effects, treatment begins with caution and with a lower dose of the drug. In case of acute overdose and poisoning, it is recommended to stop taking Cytomel and conduct control examinations.

Thyreostatics means overdose is not recommended.

It is possible to conduct plasmapheresis.

Use Of Cytomel During Pregnancy

During pregnancy and after treatment with thyroid hormone (e.g. hypothyroidism) should continue.

Of thyroid hormone that enters breast milk is not sufficient to cause the disorder in children. However, the drug is taken carefully at this time.

The FDA requires the following warning to be present on the packaging of all Cytomel prescription drugs sold in the US: “Previously, thyroid drugs that have hormonal activity, alone or in conjunction with other therapeutic drugs, were used in the treatment of obesity. For euthyroid patients, the doses needed to maintain daily hormonal levels are ineffective for weight loss. Large doses can provoke serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, especially in combination with sympathomimetic amines used as drugs that cause anorexia.”
